On Friday, the Green Bay Packers visit the San Francisco Giants at Levi’s Stadium to open the NFL preseason for both teams. Aaron Rodgers will not play for Green Bay on Friday. Wide receiver Sammy Watkins is also out with an injury and rookie Christian Watson has been listed as day-to-day. Running backs AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones are also not expected to see any playing time on Friday.
Green Bay will start quarterback Jordan Love. In limited action during 2021, Love completed 58.1% of his throws for an average of only 6.6 yards per pass attempt. Danny Eting, who is Green Bay’s only other QB on the roster, will see playing time against San Francisco on Friday. Love has a great deal to prove as he is the heir apparent to Rodgers but has not been able to showcase his talent on the field as of yet.

San Francisco will start recently named No. 1 quarterback Trey Lance on Friday against Green Bay. Last season in six games, Lance passed for 603 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. The former North Dakota State star has been inconsistent during training camp but playing with starters for the entire offense will give Lance an opportunity to showcase his talents.
Backing up Lance on Friday will be Nate Sudfeld who was Philadelphia's backup for three seasons before joining San Francisco last season. Also expected to see time for San Francisco is rookie Brock Purdy, who was drafted out of Ohio State and broke nearly every passing record at that school. The 49ers will have a definite advantage at quarterback in this matchup against Green Bay and that is a big factor in preseason games.
