Virginia Cavaliers vs. Pitt Panthers

NCAAF: 7:30 PM EST

Aug. 31, 2019

TV: ACCN
Latest Odds : UVA -3 Total 47

The Virginia Cavaliers are set to visit Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for an ACC clash against the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Virginia Cavaliers are looking to continue their success from the 2018 season as they went 8-5 with an appearance in the Belk Bowl, and they return some key pieces on the offensive side of the ball. Bryce Perkins will return under center for the Cavaliers, and he should be able to repeat his 2018 campaign where he contributed 2680 passing yards, 923 rushing yards, and 34 total TDs. Perkins will have to go without his top WR and RB from last season who both eclipsed 1000 yards in their respective statistical categories.

The Virginia Cavaliers had one of the best defenses in college football last season as they finished the year ranked 21st in points allowed, but they will need to replace some key talent moving forward. The Cavaliers graduated their top player last season as Juan Thornhill moved onto the NFL after contributing 98 tackles and 6 interceptions. Jordan Mack is looking to step into a bigger role for the Virginia Cavaliers as the senior LB contributed 66 tackles last season.

The Pittsburgh Panthers are looking to continue their success from the 2018 season as they went 7-7 with an appearance in the Sun Bowl, but they will need to be much better on the offensive side of the ball. Kenny Pickett will need to show more consistency as a passer as he only threw for 1969 yards, 12 TDs, and 6 interceptions last season. The ground attack will take a blow as they will be without their two 1000-yard rushers from 2018 as Qadree Ollison and Darrian Hall are currently in the NFL.

The Pittsburgh Panthers struggled at times on the defensive side of the ball last season as they finished the year ranked 75th in points allowed, and they will have to replace a few key pieces this year. The Panthers will be without their leading tackler from a season ago as Oluwaseun Idowu moved to the NFL after pitching in a team-high 82 tackles last year. Rashad Weaver will look to once again amp up the pass rush as the redshirt junior contributed 14 TFL and 6.5 sacks during the 2018 season.

Recent Betting Trends:

Cavaliers are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall.

Under is 4-1 in Cavaliers last 5 games in August.

Panthers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 conference games.

Under is 15-7-1 in Panthers last 23 games on grass.

Free Betting Pick: Virginia Cavaliers -2.5

The favorite has had success in the last 9 meetings between the Virginia Cavaliers and Pittsburgh Panthers as they are 6-2-1 ATS. The Virginia Cavaliers picked up a lot of preseason hype in terms of potentially winning the ACC Coastal division, and I think that is very doable with Bryce Perkins. Bronco Mendenhall has installed a winning program at UVA, and they proved that last season with a blowout victory over South Carolina in the Belk Bowl. Pittsburgh was able to make a run towards the ACC championship last season due to their dangerous ground attack, but the fact that they lost both 1000-yard rusher concerns me, even at home. Final Score Prediction, Virginia Cavaliers win and cover ATS 24-10.
