Massachusetts Minutemen vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights

NCAAF: 7:15 PM EST

Aug. 30, 2019

TV: BTN
Latest Odds : RUTG -14.5 Total

The Massachusetts Minutemen visit the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Friday, August 30 at HighPoint.com Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey in the opening game of the 2019 college football regular season for both. UMass begins the season with a new head coach, while Rutgers looks to rebound from a 1-11 season.

Massachusetts opens the season with new head coach Walt Bell and will need a few games under its belt to take in Bell’s new systems both offensively and defensively. The Minutemen have just 8 of 22 starters returning from last season, are weak on both the offensive and defensive lines, slow outside and will have problems containing the Rutgers offense. Last year UMass managed just 10 sacks all season.

Rutgers wants to quickly put its 1-11 nightmare of a season behind it in a big way. Rutgers went out and used the graduate transfer wire to pick up much needed talent. McLane Carter transferred from Texas Tech and should be the starting quarterback beating out Artur Sitkowski. Two tight ends were brought in. The defense was strengthened with linebacker Drew Singleton joining from Michigan.

The leading receiver returning from last season is Brennon Dingle with 19 receptions for 269 yards and two touchdowns.

Rutgers will start either McLane Carter or Artur Sitkowski at quarterback. Sitkowski last season threw for 1,158 yards, four touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Raheem Blackshear returns as the leading rusher from last season with 586 yards and three touchdowns. Blackshear led all receivers last season with 44 receptions for 367 yards and two touchdowns.

Rutgers has its top running back returning from last season and will either have last year’s quarterback Artur Sitkowski or graduate transfer McLane Carter who started the first game of the season last year for Texas Tech, starting under center. UMass starts with a new head coach, new quarterback, new running back and must replace its best player of last season wide receiver Andy Isabella who is now in the NFL. The Minutemen will have problems scoring in this one. Final Score Prediction, Rutgers Scarlet Knights win and cover ATS 30-10
