This is not the game Penn State envisioned for itself when the season began but the loss to Minnesota basically set them up with this game that and the loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes that ensued later. Wisconsin later met up with Ohio State getting another loss but the bowl committees decided not to penalize the Badgers and they ended up in the Rose Bowl.
This Cotton Bowl takes place in Arlington Texas at AT&T Stadium. Penn State finished out the season with a win over Rutgers but that game even at the final of 27-6 was far closer then that score would indicate. It was 7 to 3 at half time and that is just the sort of not into the game that I see happening here in Arlington but if it happens against the Tigers they are more then capable of making the Nittany Lions pay.

Penn State got key wins this season over Pitt 17-10 Purdue 35-7 Iowa 17-12 and Michigan 28-21 in a dog fight the Lions also handled a very good Indiana Hoosiers team that finished the year 8-4 with a double overtime win at Purdue. Memphis comes in here a much improved program thanks Mike Novell after he up and left the team for Florida State just after the season ended.
Ryan Silverfield will serve as the interim head coach and look for him to have a very inspired team this Memphis team who beat a very good Bearcats team in back to back weeks to finish the year with just the one loss. Memphis had nice wins also over SMU 54-48 and Tulane 47-17 and of course Navy 35-23. It has been years since Memphis was in this type of a bowl game.
