On Thursday, the Atlanta Hawks open their NBA regular season with a visit to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan to play the Detroit Pistons. The Hawks have a host of young, talented players on their roster including a nucleus of Trae Young, Kevin Huerter and John Collins. Atlanta added to that group by drafting De’Andre Hunter, Bruno Fernando and Cam Reddish and signing Allen Crabbe and Jabari Parker.

Atlanta traded Kent Bazemore in exchange for Portland’s Evan Turner, swapped Omari Spellman for Damian Jones and sent packing Miles Plumlee and Solomon Hill for Chandler Parsons and have signed veteran Vince Carter for his 22nd and final NBA season. The talent for a contender in the Eastern Conference exists for the Hawks but the question is can the youngsters and splash of veterans put it together and grab a playoff spot at season end?

Detroit will be playing the second half of a back-to-back on Thursday as the Pistons open their regular season on Wednesday on the road against the Indiana Pacers. Detroit needs Blake Griffin to stay healthy for an entire season as the Pistons will only go as far as their explosive forward can take them, but the team announced on Tuesday that Griffin would not play in Wednesday’s opener against Indiana and his status for the team’s home opener Thursday is not known.

Most of the roster that reached the playoffs last season returns including Griffin, Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard and Andre Drummond. Derrick Rose was signed to bring veteran experience and leadership to the backcourt. The Pistons also added Tim Frazier and Markieff Morris while drafting Sekou Doumbouya. If Drummond and Griffin can thrive down low the Pistons may break into the Eastern Conference’s top five.

Detroit’s Blake Griffin is not playing the season opener on the road against Indiana and his playing status for Thursday’s home opener in Detroit is unknown. The Pistons playing a back-to-back with one game on the road to start the season will be tough. Atlanta on the other hand has covered the number in 4 of its last 5 versus the Pistons and in 5 of the last 6 played in Detroit. Final Score Prediction, Atlanta Hawks win and cover ATS 115-107
